Boyce Forms/Systems Celebrates 110th Anniversary

Daleville, IN – On November 1, 2009, the employees of Boyce Forms will celebrate the company’s 110th anniversary. In this age of mergers, acquisitions and business closings, it is unusual to find a company who has remained in business for 110 years, and is still operating as a family-owned business. Boyce Forms / Systems was founded in Muncie in 1899 as Boyce Campbell Co. by Arthur E. Boyce and a Robert P. Campbell. Shortly after, they merged with W.H. Besak & Co., to form the Hoosier Printing Company. In 1912, Mr. Boyce acquired full ownership of the company and the business was renamed A.E. Boyce Company. Arthur E. Boyce was the son of James Boyce, an Irish immigrant who left his homeland during the potato famine. In 1870, he settled in Muncie with $10,000 in savings and plans of building a bagging mill. James Boyce was quite an entrepreneur, starting Muncie’s first gas and electric utility companies. He built Muncie’s first modern business block in 1880, the Boyce Block on East Main Street, which stands today and is home to Muncie Civic Theatre and Gordy Fine Art & Framing. Boyce headed up a local group which invited the Ball Brothers and other manufacturers to locate in Muncie, an area known for its abundance of natural gas.

Boyce Forms / Systems is currently a fourth-generation family-owned enterprise under the direction of Michael Boyce Galliher, President/CEO. The company began operations in the bookbinding, printing, forms and accounting systems business, serving the mid-central United States, with a primary focus on Indiana. Some of A. E. Boyce Co.’s first clients were county governments which grew into a business base including municipal governments, utilities, schools and other niche markets. In, A.E. Boyce Co. signed its first government contract with Henry County. The company’s growth over 110 years of continuous operation is an example of understanding one’s core business markets, client needs and having the willingness to adapt to meet changes in how information is recorded and managed. As computerization began to replace printed forms in governmental information management, Boyce took a leadership role in helping develop technology-based applications for this transition, becoming a player in the software segment of their markets. In 1986, as the company expanded into the technology-based segment of the governmental records and forms business, they sold their office supplies, business furnishings and office interior design operations and changed their corporate name from A.E. Boyce Co. to Boyce Forms / Systems. In the same year they relocated to a new facility on Riggin Road.

The company has been a mainstay of the Delaware County business community, operating from just five different locations over the 110 year period: first in a building on East Main at Elm in Muncie; relocating in 1904 to 321 East Main St.; moving in 1965 into an ultra modern facility at 300 East Jackson St.; relocating in 1986 to 501 West Riggin Rd. in the Air Park Industrial Center; and in 2005 consolidating all operations to the unique Boyce Technology Pavilion, a 70,000 SF specially-designed facility at the Heartland Business Center in Daleville, IN. Each move was brought about by business growth and the need for larger facilities. Company leadership throughout the 110 years has been provided by: Arthur E. Boyce – 1899 to 1952; Robert J. Galliher – 1952 to 1958; David A. Galliher – 1958 to 1991; and Michael B. Galliher – 1991 through the present. The 110th anniversary of Boyce Forms / Systems represents the successful collective efforts and marriage of two of Delaware County’s most prominent business families, the Boyce family and the Galliher family.

“We have worked smart and hard at reinventing our business model to stay ahead of the market,” stated Michael B. Galliher, President/CEO of Boyce Forms / Systems. “The needs of our clients change constantly as well as the demands placed on them. We make sure that we are providing products to keep them operating as efficiently and effectively as possible. The employees deserve the credit for our successful evolution and transformation into a 21st century leader in information management products and services. We embrace change and look forward to future opportunities and challenges.”

During the 1980’s and 90’s, Boyce entered into what became the document management industry, as the company worked closely with financial software companies specializing in government entities. In many cases, Boyce was asked to advise clients concerning the best software for their needs. In 1997, Boyce joined the software development industry by acquiring Komputrol Software, a company specializing in school financial, municipal financial and utility billing software. In 2003, Boyce purchased Keystone Consulting Services, another major software provider serving cities, towns, schools and utilities. These software development acquisitions allowed Boyce Forms / Systems to provide fully integrated information and document management systems as a single source supplier.

Today, all divisions of Boyce – Boyce Forms / Systems, Keystone Software and Komputrol Software - are headquartered in the unique Boyce Technology Pavilion on the Heartland Business Center campus at the intersection of I-69 and SR-67 in Daleville.
